How to Easily Fill Prescriptions for Your Sick Pet!

April 22, 2014 by amushro

When we take our dog for walks in the neighborhood, we always get the question “what kind of dog is that?”  She is the kind of dog that steals your covers at night, snores loud enough to wake the dead, and digs her little paws into your back all night long. She is the kind of dog that has barked at the mailman every day for nine years even though we assure her the man is simply dropping off the mail. She is the kind of dog that will steal your breakfast if you get up to refill your coffee, and takes a few sloppy licks from your kid’s ice cream cone when they turn their head. But more importantly, she is the kind of dog that is thrilled every time you walk through the door (even if you just step out to get the paper). She is the kind of dog that is more than just a dog, and when we have a sick pet, we’ll do anything to make her feel better because she is truly part of our family.

She also is the kind of dog that when we make Christmas cards, we do things like this:

suggie as rudolph #WalgreensRX #ShopWhile her full name is Sugar Ray, she is just Suggie to us. Even though she was our first “baby,” she has taken well to her role as big sister to our kids. When we brought our son home from the hospital almost five years ago, Suggie had the tiniest bit of gray on her muzzle.

Suggie and Aaron #WallgreensRX #shop

Now she’s showing her age and the stress of raising kids with a pure white beard. Don’t worry Suggie, I feel the same way, but hopefully I don’t have nearly as many grays as you! Don’t let her age fool you. She still finds her way onto my side of the bed, into my purse for a snack, and will wreck anything a little too fragile. Adorable, yes. Graceful, no

Suggie Collage #WalgreensRX #Shop

After a few years of  visiting the vet for normal check-ups, we found ourselves frequenting the veterinarians office because our girl started having seizures. I’ll be honest, I was scared. Really scared. Scared that my vivacious dog would never be the same.  Scared that I wouldn’t be able to care for her the way she needed.

Our vet assured us that with daily medication, she would continue being the nightly bed hog we’ve grown to love and adore.

However, this also meant Suggie would be on medication like Phenobarbital for the rest of her life. She may be a member of our family, but she isn’t covered under our family prescription plan. Luckily after chatting with the pharmacist at Walgreens, I learned a few things about medication for dogs.

Did you know some medicines can be made with beef or chicken flavor ? Really, it’s true! Better tasting medicine aside, even though it’s the same medicine, you can save money on most of pet prescription at Walgreens. The pharmacist said the markups are higher at the vet’s office and there’s usually a dispensing fee. Since Suggie is taking mediation every day and needs regular refills, we’re saving  money at Walgreens.

Walgreens collage #WalgreensRX #shop

Last week I had to pick up medicine for my daughter and grabbed Suggie’s refill while I was there. With the Family Prescription Management,  I can manage our entire family (including the four-legged one) online. Plus it cracks me up to see Suggie’s full name on her prescription bottles.

website #WalgreensRX #shop

Added bonus to make my life a whole lot easier: Refill Reminders so I’ll never have to remember to refill her pills again! The Walgreens website is really easy to use, and by signing up as a Balance Rewards Member, we are saving even more money. I even downloaded the Walgreens app so I can take care of everyone’s prescription right from my phone!

So nothing is slowing Suggie down, and really, we  wouldn’t want this crazy, old girl any other way. But she wants to know if you are going to finish that sandwich?

Making Easter “Eggstra” Special with Hallmark Easter Cards & Simple Easter Crafts

April 7, 2014 by amushro

CB Disclosure White Background 600 px wide#EasterValue #CollectiveBias

#EasterValue #CollectiveBias

Older brothers are the worst, and mine is no exception. As kids, he was always a Couch Commando stealing the remote control from me, always had that smelly boy scent that is a cross between wet dog and dirt, and even worse, as teens he never let me date his friends. See, he was the WORST. However, as time goes on, if you are really lucky, those awful big brothers slowly turn into your friend  and you realize he’s not so awful. And while he still controls the remote on holidays and finally has that stinky thing under control, the best part of having a brother is watching our kids become the best of friends. If you ask my kids who is their “bestest” friend in the whole wide world, they ALWAYS answer “our cousins!” Even though hundreds of miles separate them, it never dampens their bond. So that’s why holidays that we can’t be together are rough on all of us. To cheer myself and the kids up about not seeing their cousins/best friends on Easter, I suggested we send cards that tell them how much we miss and love them. Lucky for me, Hallmark Value cards are adorable and the right price. No need to break this Easter Bunny’s wallet!

Cousins #CollectiveBias #EasterValue

Since I knew that our Walmart has a huge selection of Hallmark cards, I unleashed the kids on the greeting card aisle and let them pick out a handful of Hallmark cards for their cousins. My apologizes to the good people at Walmart. I swear I tried to put the cards back in their rightful place.

Lyla Card #CollectiveBias #EasterValue

They took their selection process very seriously! Since the Hallmark Value Cards were only ¢97, I didn’t mind that they picked up a few extras for their grandparents and friends. Plus if you are a member of the Hallmark Rewards Program, for every card you purchase at Walmart, you earn rewards.  So go ahead, kiddos, grab a few more!#EasterValue #CollectiveBias

When we got home, they couldn’t wait to personalize each card.

#CollectiveBias #EasterValue

When the cards were done, it was time for a little show and share. Even though the cards would be delivered in a few days, the kids couldn’t wait to show off their handy work. The easiest way to keep in touch with their cousins is to Skype, and they always want to put on a show for their captive audience.  So before our Skype session started, we put together the easiest and cutest Easter craft.

Bunny Sock Puppet #EasterValue #CollectiveBias

sock bunny #CollectiveBias #EasterValue

They didn’t stop with a puppet show just for their cousins. They even performed for their biggest fans, their grandparents.

Sykping! #EasterValue ##CollectiveBias

The cards were supposed to be a surprise, but they couldn’t resist sharing what special surprise would be coming in the mail in a few days.

Even though the kids can’t spend Easter with their cousins, I know that little things like sending cards and performing puppet shows over Skype are great ways to help the kids stay connected until they are all together again.

Make sure you check out connectionsfromhalmark.com to sign up for Hallmark rewards, and to see great content from other bloggers. Be sure to join the #EasterValue conversation on Twitter!

A Little Blue Pixie Dust for the Pirate Fairy DVD Playdate

April 3, 2014 by amushro

I am a member of the Collective Bias®  Social Fabric® Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper amplification for Collective Bias and its advertiser #ProtectPixieHollow #CollectiveBias.

PirateFairyheroImage #ProjectPixieHollow #Collective Bias

I’m a firm believer in “more is more.” Forget “less is more” when it comes to all of the good stuff like more kids giggling and playing, more blowing off steam with Mommy friends, more yummy snack, and always more snuggling during movie time. “More is more” can lead to lots of juice boxes being spilled on my couch, popcorn squished in my carpet, and the organized chaos that we call playdates, but it also leads to gems like this:

Movie Watchers #ProtectPixieHollow #CollectiveBias

When these playdates started, the oldest kids were just babies that fit into one small room, and they only needed a few toys with flashing lights to entertain them. A few years later, and a whole bunch of siblings later,  our  playdates grew into preschoolers, toddlers, and babies that easily overtake your house, voices that echo through your hallways, and kiddos that have interests as varied as their little faces. But when you catch them (well most of them) all lined up on the couch, munching on popcorn, watching a new movie, I just want to SQUEEZE them all! So it did take a little magic, maybe a little a little fairy magic, to get them all to stop in their tracks and watch a movie. It was Disney’s The Pirate Fairy DVD that was released on April 1 (no April Fools here!).

Want a sneak peek of Tinkerbell and her fairy friends?

Trailer – The Pirate Fairy on Disney Video

SinceI was hosting the next playdate, mykids and I be-bopped over to Walmart to pick up The Pirate Fairy DVD and supplies for the playdate that would make it a little magical but also make it really easy on me. As an added bonus, Walmart is the only place you can find the combo pack with the Blue Ray/DVD and a special extra DVD of The Pixie Hollow Bake Off that includes ten animated shorts with Tinkerbell and her friends. Since we love Tinkerbell in this house, we will take all the extras we can get!

Movie #ProjectPixieHollow #CollectiveBias

In the movie, Tinkerbell and the other fairies talk a lot about the magic behind blue pixie dust; it only seemed fitting that the  the popcorn and fruit tray I picked up at Walmart had the same magical blue pixie dust (also knows as blue sugar sprinkles). “Be careful, kids,” I told the movie watchers, “if you eat too much, you might fly away!”

Pixie Dust FoodWhat party would be complete without cupcakes? Now while I make fantastic cupcakes (OK, no…no I don’t), Walmart’s bakery section helped me out again, and I just popped in pirate decorations to personalize the sweet treats for a Pirate Fairy Party.  Since the bonus pack included the DVD Pixie Hollow Bake Off, I told the kids that Tinkerbell and baking fairy Gelata (voiced by Giada de Laurentiis)  were the ones behind their yummy cupcakes.

Pirate Fairy cupcake #ProjectPixieHollow #CollectiveBias

With so many kids at different ages and stages, I was a little nervous that  just one movie wouldn’t be a crowd pleaser, but it was clear that every superhero and princess loved watching Tinkerbell and her fairy friends use teamwork to save Pixie Hollow.

SuperHeros and Princesses #ProjectPixieHollow #CollectiveBiasOK, kids, the snacks are gone and the movie is over. Your moms have gathered up your socks and shoes. What was your favorite part of today? Being with friends, of course!

A Little Help Potty Training with Me-ify Potty Star App

February 6, 2014 by amushro

This is a sponsored post for Me-ify Potty Star App and Mom Select; however, all opinions are 100% my own.

When the great big ball dropped in NYC to signify that 2014 had begun, I proudly announced to my husband (after a New Year’s smooch) “2014 is the year we go diaperless in this house!” This was quite a brave statement for a lady that had a few too many glasses of wine at the New Year’s party, but I meant it. In 2014 there will be no more diapers in this house. It’s time for my two and a half-year old to be potty trained! Lucky for me, she is ready, I’m ready, this ain’t my first rodeo, and this time we are using a Me-ify Potty Star app on my iPhone to  encourage her and keep her interested in potty training.

Since my little gal is crazy about playing with the apps on my phone, this is right up her alley. What I really liked is the app had plenty to keep her entertained and keep potty training on her mind. The app was fun, interactive, and kept her coming back to play again and again. I hate when the kids lose interest in an app quickly and we have to delete it after a day or two. Even my son jumped in to play with Me-ify and his sister.

photo 1

When we were setting up the app together, she really loved that we made the character that stars in the songs, games, and stories look like her. You can record your child’s name so that the songs and stories include extra personalization. Really cute!

photo 3

Since consistency is so important when potty training, even the language the app uses can be tailored to the words you use for body parts and number one and number two. Honestly, I never would have thought about the words used, but imagine how confusing that could be for your kids if too many different words were used!

photo (1)

The setup was really easy, but the real fun started when my daughter played around and came across the songs (all silly and all dealing with potty training)–she loved them. The story that had her as the star—she giggles every time she hears my recorded voice say her name. And the games that let you have “target practice,”  or the bathroom find and seek. Both of my kids liked the games and I hear them giggle during “target practice.”

photo 4

Overall, we both really liked the app. The personalization is great because it allows the app to use words you will be using during potty training (this really helps with consistency). The cute games, stories, and songs encourage your kids and keep potty training on their minds. Finally, there is a star chart that helps your kid see their progress and success while training.

So bring it on, we are ready for potty training and no more diapers!!!

On My Honor: Real Life Lessons Learned as a Girl Scout

January 31, 2014 by amushro

G.S. disclaimer

Yesterday two Girl Scouts, all decked out in their snazzy green uniforms, came to my door selling cookies. Sashes proudly displayed their numerous badges that were surely earned with great dedication and pride, and just a few steps behind them was their mom, patiently waiting and smiling as her girls made yet another successful sale. Not only do I love Girl Scout cookies (seriously could there be anything more delicious?), but the Girl Scouts organization truly holds a special place in my heart.

Sharplogo“You know,” I told the scouts, “I was a Girl Scout too, and my mom was my troop leader.” The youngest piped up to exclaim “Our mom is the troop leader too!” I waved to her mom and told the girls “Well you are very lucky. Be sure to thank her.”

Immediately I started thinking about the life skills learned while a Girl Scout. Who would’ve thought some of the most valuable skills I learned came years later when I became a mother thinking about my own mom and troop leader.

Girl Scouts

While there are badges for photography, music,  and gardening, there really should be one for multi-tasking and making it work. Because to make my Girl Scout years fun-filled and full of smiles, my mom surely earned those badges.

The camping, the songs, the crafts, my mom loved it all, but she really cherished that her own mother was her troop leader and that she could do the same for me. While digging through photos of her Girl Scout days, I found this gem. Check out my super stylish mom at camp (first row, second from the right):

g.s 5

When it came time for me to become a Girl Scout, my mom was all in. Even though she already had a full plate with a million other responsibilities, she jumped in and planned each meeting and activity with such thoughtfulness (or at least it looked that way) and skill (again, it really did look that way). Even a troop full of girls that really hated to be outdoors earned a few more badges than they thought they could.

Mother/Daughter sleep away camp with matching shirts? You betcha!

amanda girlscouts _0005 (1)

While my grandmother painstakingly sewed each and every badge onto my mother’s sash, my mother had no time for that nonsense. She hot glued those bad boys right on, and if one popped off, she’d just fire up the hot glue gun. Sometimes you just have to make it work.

But more importantly than badges or camps was the fact that my mom knew being a Girl Scout was something I loved and she wanted to be a part of something I loved even though it made her already hectic life even more bananas.  So maybe the most important life skill I learned as a Girl Scout was not how to make jewelry or line dancing, but being present for your kids, being a part of what they love, and using a hot glue gun to make it work.

The Girl Scouts have declared February 7-8, 2014 as National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend! This special event is a great opportunity for Girl Scouts to share the importance of the Cookie Program and what it does for the girls and their communities! Through this effort, Girl Scouts hope to show when we buy a box of cookies, we’re helping the girls learn important skills like goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics— skills essential to life and success!

Cookie Weekend

So if you love the Girl Scouts and Girl Scout Cookies (and I know you do), join them for the National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend February 7-8!

Amazing Deals on Student Mobile Plans From The Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store

December 9, 2013 by amushro

CB Disclosure White Background 600 px wide

#shop #APlusPlan #Cbias Amazing Deals on Student Mobile Plans If you are lucky enough to be in earshot of me from Thanksgiving to New Years, you will be wildly entertained by my nonstop singing of Christmas carols. While some may liken my voice to Adele (OK, really no one would say that), it’s the two kiddos that have joined in on my festive holiday singing that are the crowd pleasers. While they are huge Jingle Bells fans, my favorite is still Home for the Holidays, because this time of year, I am missing my family tremendously and counting down the days until we can all be together to celebrate the holidays. So until I can get home to “Pennsylvania for some homemade pumpkin pie” my kids and I will be counting on modern technology to keep our family connected. In this house, cool new gadgets mean we stay connected to my parents and my brother’s family. It’s not uncommon to find one kid Skyping with my parents and the other chatting on the phone with my nephew. The best electronics might mean games, pictures, or fast internet service to some, but to us it means family time.

Staying Connected- #shop #APlusPlan #Cbias

Maybe it’s overuse, the constant drops on the floor, or maybe it’s just the holiday stress, but my cellphone has not been pulling its weight around here. Time for an upgrade! I decided to try the Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store that’s located inside the mall near our house. While Best Buy is sort of a heaven for my husband (must be all of the flashing lights, TVs, and gadgets), Best Buy Mobile Specialty store is exactly what I needed: close to home, just the mobile devices and accessories that I need, and super helpful associates for those of us that ask A LOT of questions. Added bonus: Santa was located right outside the store! I told the kids the “Big Man in Red” could see if they were naughty or nice while Mommy shopped for a new phone.

Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store #shop

While my kids ran around the store grabbing every phone off of the shelves (is that why there is a rope attached to the phones? Smart!), Luis, who I will now refer to as my new best friend, was the lucky sales associate to help show me everything Best Buy Mobile Specialty Stores have to offer. He showed me the different phones, all of the different pricing plans, and the trade in value of my current phone.  In addition to showing me a few tips and tricks on his own phone, he thought it was hilarious when my two year old knocked down a rack of phone cases. My best buddy Luis has a two year old of his own at home and knows the drill.

Helpful associates #shop

After we helped clean up the cellphone cover disaster, I had to pull out the big guns and “call” Santa.

Calling Santa #shop

Since this family relies on my cellphone to stay connected with our family that lives far away,  one particular plan that Luis told me about is an amazing deal, is the perfect way to keep families connected over the holidays, and it helps students save money on pricey mobile plans. The Sprint My Way Promotion is a way for students to purchase a phone flat-out (some of the phones are pricey but some are really reasonable), but the best part– talk, text, and data are free! Are you thinking about your own mobile pricing plans right now? If you are a student or you have a student on your shopping list, think about how much this could save you (plus they would have to call you because you got this great deal for them)

Here is how it’s works:

#shop The Sprint My Way Promotion

If there was ever a doubt in my mind that our fancy electronics are the key to helping us stay connected to our family (especially over the holidays), I watched my son “call” his cousin while we in the store.

Making Chores Less Painful With Chore Monster

November 29, 2013 by amushro

ChoreMonster

You know when you reach that point in the day when you cannot, you simply CANNOT ask your children one more time to complete the simplest of tasks? And, if in fact, you have to ask them again, you will simply lose your mind, break open the peanut butter jar, and dive in head first? Oh you too? Glad to see this isn’t just happening around this joint.

Morning are getting pretty painful around here. No one will brush their teeth unless I ask them 746 times, and the idea of putting on socks and shoes is as if I have asked them to climb Mt. Everest. When I would see those adorable homemade chore charts or the charts you can buy, I sometimes think those are the answer; however, I can’t remember to keep up the advent calendar (and ours has chocolate). How am I supposed to maintain a chore chart? Really, I don’t need one more task.

So when Chore Monster introduced me to their website and apps that makes chores fun, easy to track, and the kids can pick their own rewards, I knew we could do this!

Setup was super easy (read: if it’s easy for me, you can do it too), and my little guy liked picking the rewards

Chore: Brush your teeth twice a day  Reward: You won’t have stinky Brontosaurus breath

Chore: Make your bed every morning Reward: Mommy will read an extra book to you and night

Chore: Get your socks and shoes on before school Reward: At the end of the week a trip to get frozen yogurt

These may seem like baby steps, y’all, but just having him accomplish these simple tasks without me having to ask a million times makes our mornings run so much more smoothly. I sorta love Chore Monster, and I’m totally writing their name with doodle hearts around it. Like this:

hearts chore monster

Because my main man even gets to pick his own rewards, we are even talking about the difference between things we have to do and the things that help us earn the big rewards. So if we make it a few days successfully completing our chores, he gets a trip to our favorite frozen yogurt place where he can add his own toppings–so basically a ton of gummy worms and chocolate chips.

So let’s review–he’s got minty fresh breath, shoes on is feet, and his bed looks like it came right out of Pottery Barn (if Pottery barn let preschoolers make their beds) and we all get frozen yogurt. Me likey!

Because we have the app on my phone, he was super excited to mark each chore as “complete” and he even wanted to add more chores! I started to think the possibilities were endless–make dinner for Mommy or paint the bathroom I’ve been asking your dad to do for months. Alright, we’ll be more realistic: clear your dishes after meals and feed the dog.

This kid loved his new responsibilities, loved marking each task complete, loved his rewards, and loved that Mommy wasn’t  screaming “WILL SOMEONE PLEASE BRUSH THEIR TEETH IN THIS HOUSE!”

The chores you pick and the rewards are totally up to you. So you make them age specific as well as change them when needed. Plus you can vary them like I did–a pat on the back for the basics and the big guns for the chores you really need to work on.

Want to try out ChoreMonster? Perfect, because the first 100 readers that click this link and sign up can start their own account for thirty days for free!

Convenient, Fresh Ground Coffee Can Make Grocery Shopping Better–It’s True!

October 8, 2013 by amushro

*I am a member of the Collective Bias ® Social Fabric ®Community.  This post has been compensated as part of a social shopper insight study for Collective Bias and their client*

I really love taking two small children to the grocery store to shop for the week. Wait, I have to catch my breath from laughing so hard. The truth is having two kids in tow while food shopping can be enough to make this gal lose her mind, but this week I had a secret weapon thanks to Rubi Kiosk coffee . If the kids can have snacks to entertain and distract them, then Mamma can have Seattle’s Best fresh ground coffee while I browse the aisles of our local grocery store.

I am a firm believer that with coffee in hand, I can accomplish just about anything. However, with a delicious cup of pumpkin spice coffee that didn’t break the bank to buy, well then watch out world!

#Shop

At first I was a little nervous about getting coffee from a kiosk. I mean come on, I’m used to paying close to five dollars for fancy coffee and waiting ten minutes for it to be made. I just assumed I would have to take the coffee the way the machine decided, but there were tons of choices of flavors as well as several different milk  and sweetener options. So if you are just as picky as me, you can get your personalized your coffee just the way you like it.

cbias4

Who would have thought that watching delicious coffee being made from a kiosk could be so entertaining?

This isn’t a machine full of coffee just sitting and waiting for you to stop by and push a few buttons. Once you make your selection, the coffee beans are ground as soon as you order. And a few minutes later I had hot fresh brewed coffee.

cbias7

So I took my fresh Seattle’s Best coffee, my coffee cheerleaders, my coupons, and we were off to shop. However, this time the usual cart pushing, rows and rows of sugary cereal, and not being able to find corn starch (seriously where do they put that stuff?) wasn’t so bad. In fact, I would venture to say I actually enjoyed grocery shopping with my kids. I know, shocking right?

“Ready, Set, Read & Write” a LeapFrog Party!

October 2, 2013 by amushro

*I received free LeapFrog products in order to host the LeapFrog sponsored MommyParty. The opinions expressed here are my own*

We are huge fans of LeapFrog in this house, and when the fabulous people at LeapFrog asked me to host a “Ready, Set,  Read & Write party for my kids and their friends, I hopped (get it–LeapFrog/ hopped), at the chance. Even better, the new LeapReader is geared to early readers and writers, which is perfect for my kids and their pals.

We had 8 of our favorite friends (yes 8 preschoolers) over for a fun-filled party where they had the chance to try out the new LeapReader.

Leap Reader is the complete learn-to read -and write solution that combines three essential literacy skills: reading, writing and listening. Leap Reader is designed to enhance vocabulary development and   reading comprehensions to help children become confident, independent readers and writers.

Here is the great party pack that we received from LeapFrog:

LeapFrogSo what is all this?

Two LeapReaders™

LeapReader™ books including:

Learn to Write Letters With Mr. Pencil Writing Workbook

 Talking Words Factory Writing Workbook

LeapFrog Disney-Pixar Monsters University 3D book
Also includes 16 pairs of LeapFrog Monsters University 3D glasses!

 Get Ready for Kindergarten book

Talking Words Factory Flash Cards

 Two LeapReader™ Sampler books

We setup the “Read, Write, Listen Lounge” and the kids couldn’t wait to try everything out! They were able to familiarize themselves with how the LeapReader works and could easily switch between the audio books, games, letter writing, and letter sounds features. All of the moms were amazed at how easily the kids were able to interact with everything in the LeapReader party pack.

LeapFrogCollage

Here are some of the reasons that we are loving the LeapReader:

  • It has a library of 150+ books, workbooks, audio books and more. This means we can grow our LeapReader library and I don’t have to worry that my kids will quickly get tired of the LeapReader.
  • My son and my daughter really enjoy the LeapReader and the coordinating library. Having a toy they both enjoy is HUGE around here!
  • Since my son is in Pre-K, we are always looking for ways to encourage his letter writing. The LeapReader gives him so many creative options to practice his letter writing, letter sounds, and early reading
  • Even better, the kids are playing but are learning and practicing.  How great is that?
  • Some of their favorite Disney and Pixar characters are featured in the books!
  • The LeapReader has a USB rechargeable battery and doesn’t come with tons of small pieces that we will lose. Thank you, Leapfrog!

Leapfrogcollage2The kids took turns trying out the LeapReader, but the Moms were loving how the kids truly enjoyed the books even while patiently waiting for their turn. And we all know how hard it is to wait to play with the cool new toy. Just watch:

One of the biggest hits of the party was the Monsters Inc 3D Book.

leapfrogcollage3

Who doesn’t want to practice math when it deals with candy?

leapfrog14We will definitely start adding to our LeapReader library during the holiday season. Affordable, quality, educational toys that my kids and I love, yes please!

If you want to learn more about the LeapReader you can  connect with LeapFrog on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
