5 New Things You Need For The Beach

July 23, 2015 by amushro

beach giveaway

It’s official WE LOVE SUMMER. We love every single part of summer and since the kids and I are living at the beach for a few months there is a good chance we are never, ever coming back. OK, school starts at the end of August so we’ll be back for that. Otherwise, we would just become beach bums. I’ve already shared with you my favorite beach parenting hacks and sanity savers and was ecstatic to share those hacks on the Today Show. So now I want to share a few things that have become a must for our days at the beach, plus a really fun giveaway. So here are the 5 new things you need for your beach trip.

1. Fine Foutas- Since the kids are spending 90% of their days in the ocean or the pool, we seem to have an endless supply of beach towels,. But this year those towels are simply taking up space in the linen closet because I’ve ditched them all for my first favorite summer product Fine Foutas. Fine Foutas (pronounced “foo-tahs”) are hand woven, 100% organic cotton towels that we’ve been using as a beach and pool towels, wraps, picnic blanket, throw blankets, and even a shawl on a chilly night.

At first I couldn’t imagine how a towel that was so thin could be so useful, but I’m telling you, friends, I’m a complete convert. We took the whole family to a waterpark and everyone else was unsuccessfully shoving big, bulky towels into their beach bags, but all four of our foutas folded up nicely and were perfect towels and coverups on a hot day. I love that they get softer every time they’re washed and they really hold up to the beatings of daily uses. Plus they are so pretty and I’m a sucker for anything pretty. When I told the owner of Fine Foutas that I’m a convert, she offered to give two Fine Foutas to one of my readers! Yay for giveaways!

2. Sunscreen Face Sticks- Before my kids head out the door, I cover them head to toe in sunscreen, but after hours of boogie boarding and cannonballs, that morning sunscreen isn’t enough. So when I can wrestle them out of the water for a quick snack or drink, I cover their faces and shoulders with a sunscreen stick in just a few seconds. No mess, no fighting, and I protect those precious faces. Right now we are using this one from Neutrogena.

Ultra Sheer® Face + Body Stick Sunscreen Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 70

3. Catch and Release Beach Aquarium- We’ve acquired roughly a million shovels, buckets, and random sand toys; however, the kids newest toy has trumped them all. The Catch and Release Aquarium is the perfect toy for catching sea creatures, studying them, and then releasing them back to their homes. The aquarium is plastic and floats (this has saved us when a big wave has taken it away) and the screen lid allows anything you have collected to still breathe. I love that we can use this toy at a lake or pond too. You can find the aquariums here.

Dry Branch Sports Design Catch and Release Beach Aquarium Kit

4. Tailgate Tent- In the beginning of summer, a beach umbrella was just fine for a little bit of shade. However, now that we’re in full swing and heat of summer, sorry umbrella, our tailgate tent just kicked your colorful butt. We put the tent in line with all of the other umbrellas along the water and claim our spot for the day. Our entire family can take a break under the tent and it’s perfect for getting a little extra space when the beach gets crowded. Need one? Find it here.

5. Beach Chair With A Cooler for Your Phone– I’ll admit, even at the beach, I find it hard to disconnect from my phone. And while you can keep the sand out of your phone with a sandwich bag, I learned that if you leave your iPhone in the sun, it will lock until the temperature drops! I had no idea this could even happen. Did you? So this year my beach chair has a smaller cooler on the side that keeps my phone cool and sand-free. Here’s the one I’m using:

Hope you are having a great summer and good luck on the giveaway!

This is Three and a Brown Owl Animal Hopper Giveaway!

July 7, 2014 by amushro

There is a laundry list of things I get wrong when it comes to parenting: veggies at dinner…sometimes, too much iPad time, and always eating my kids’ dessert when they aren’t looking. But there is one thing I always do right, and that, friends, are birthdays. Birthdays in this house are a big deal. A BIG, BIG, BIG deal. I’m a firm believer that if your Mamma doesn’t make a huge fuss over your birthday, then who will? Now I’m not talking about some crazy party that the final bill could rival a wedding, but a day that is filled with so much joy that the birthday baby is just ready to burst with fun, love, cake, and pure birthday bliss.  It’s cupcakes for breakfast, being sung the birthday song at least 25 times, and blowing out candles on a really fabulous cakes while wearing a special birthday outfit, and a party that screams “It’s My Birthday and It’s All About How Awesome I Am!” After all, this fabulous girl is three!

This is three

When my gal was nearing the end of her terrible twos, twos and we were looking ahead to three, it was time to start planning. One thing that I love about my fun, fearless, and fierce Little Mamma is that she loves what she loves. While she can sing every song in Frozen (just ask her and she’ll do it), her first loves are Mike and Sulley from Monster’s Inc and the Minions from Despicable Me. Three is a big birthday, so there’s no need to pick just one–so we went with all three of her favorite characters as the inspiration.

And what would a party be without a cake? When we have birthday cakes, we go for fabulous and delicious from the amazing Whitnee at Cake to Crumbs Bakery. She creates extraordinary and super yummy cakes every year for my kids. We didn’t have a single cupcake or piece of cake left–bummer, right? But that just shows how delicious her cakes are, and seriously, can you stand how adorable! Usually the birthday girl gets an icing flower on her piece of cake, but my gal requested Sulley’s eye–gross but fitting.

Mike , Sulley and Minions!

Always knowing exactly what she wants, she wants,  she picked her party location at Pump it Up where kids jump for joy on six HUGE inflatable.  As soon as we arrived for her party, she was off and bouncing away, but Hubby and I did get to sneak a quick picture of her

Birthday GirlEarly on in our birthday party circuit, I learned that party favors can be a bit of a waste and simply annoy the parents of the party guests. So this year I went for simple and found these adorable Sulley hats. I wasn’t sure if the kids would even like them, but couldn’t stop laughing when I saw all of the party goers eating their pizza and wearing these adorable hats. Here is my main man who worked up a sweat jumping and needed a little apple juice.

Party hats

The best part of this birthday party was my birthday girl’s face the entire day. Pure Joy! She bounced her little heart out, blew out her candles on the first try, and crashed the minute she hit the car on the way home. Always a good sign of a great birthday party.

This is three!

Since my gal loves to jump and bounce, she was thrilled when the nice people of Brown Owl sent her the Elephant Animal Hopper to bounce her little heart out and in celebration of my gal’s birthday,  they are giving away an Animal Hopper to one of my readers!

IMG_3405As soon as we handed her “Rocky” the elephant, she was off and bouncing. She even started singing a little song all about “Rocky.”  The toy was really easy to inflate and watching this crazy lady play proves it’s durable. Added bonus, she can even play with “Rocky” outside, and since the cover is removable and washable, we don’t have to worry that “Rocky” looks dirty and gross. What a perfect gift for a kiddo on the move!

How Teachers Really Learn & Your Chance to #ThankaTeacher

May 7, 2014 by amushro

The funny thing about going to school to become a teacher is that you assume everything you need to know will be learned in those valuable education classes. I took Educational Psychology; surely I understand the mind and motivation of my students. In my literature classes, I gobbled up every classic that my students would ever read. And, without a doubt, discipline would never be an issue because I knew how to create detailed lesson plans and used the latest teaching trends to keep students engaged and on task. But in reality, the most valuable lessons I learned about being a teaching, becoming teacher, and what a teacher truly means to her students came from watching a great teacher in action.

blackboard

With all of my education classes behind me, I was ready to teach. The only thing between me and my own classroom was student teaching. I had my school assignment, my mentor teacher, and my amazing lesson plans in hand.  Just give me those kids and let do my stuff!

And then I presented my first lesson, and it failed miserably.

The kids weren’t interested. Everything was over their heads or boring them to tears.  A few boys in the back of the class were  far more interested in throwing things at each other. A group of girls in the front were doodling hearts and flowers all over their handouts. And if it that class lasted five more minutes, I would have been in tears.

Feeling defeated and deflated, I turned to my mentor teacher, Mrs. Christ, and said “I’m not sure what happened. I thought I had everything I needed.”

With absolute patience and a kind smile, she put her arm around me and suggested we take another look at my lesson. She gave me positive feedback and some places to make changes, but more importantly she gave me insight to my students. In all of my fancy lesson planning, I forgot all about my students.

“These kids work really well in a group and these kids don’t. Let’s change these groups.”

“This is a great idea, but it’s too advanced for the students. Let’s think about how we can break it down and introduce it to them.”

“Sometimes you have the kids time to think. Don’t rush them. They”ll get it”

“You can do this. You can do this!”

In the weeks that followed, I did a lot more listening and watching. I watched Mrs. Christ interact with her students. How she encouraged the ones that were struggling. A pat on the back for the kids on the right track. And a stern look from across the room could quiet the rowdiest of kids. She could bring the quietest student  into the conversation and made sure each child felt like an important part of her class.  I watched the kids traipse into her room at lunchtime for help and sometimes just for a chat. I saw how she interacted with them inside the class and outside of class. This is where my real learning took place.

Clearly I learned a lot from my education classes, but the most valuable lessons I learned where watching Mrs. Christ work her magic with her students. For the time in her class and for her patience, kindness, and everything she taught me without even realizing, I am truly thankful.

So what about you? Do you have a teacher that you loved or made a difference in your life?  Check out this video from Kronos, explaining why we need to #ThankATeacher, and then go enter the Rafflecopter at the bottom to win a $50 Amex gift card for yourself and a $100 Staples gift card for your favorite teacher.

“What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches.” – Karl Menninger

I couldn’t agree more and couldn’t be more thankful for my time with Mrs. Christ.

So be sure to enter the giveaway and #ThankaTeacher by giving them an amazing gift!

Making Easter Special and a Hershey’s Easter Candy Giveaway!

March 22, 2014 by amushro

~This post has been sponsored by Global Influence, but all opinions are my own~

Maybe it’s because we’ve been buried with snow all winter long, but I have never been so excited for spring in my life. I love every part of spring: the unpredictable weather, the sometimes muddy playgrounds, and  flowers and trees whose pollen makes my nose itchy. Yes, friends I really do love it all (maybe not the muddy dog and kid feet). So maybe that’s why I really love Easter.

easter giveaway

When Hubby and I unleashed our kids on a dozen hard boiled eggs and several cups of bright dye, I started thinking about Easter traditions from my childhood. The big Easter dinner, racing through my grandparent’s yard searching for hidden eggs, elaborate baskets hidden from the Bunny, and black eggs.

The black eggs were my grandfather’s specialty and as a kid, I thought, much like my feelings about my Pappy, that his black eggs were the bee’s knees. After we dyed what seemed to be a million eggs, he grabbed the last egg, mixed all of the colors, and let the egg sit and sit until it became the perfect shade of black. That black egg looked silly among all of those bright pink, blue, and yellow eggs, but truth be told, it was always my favorite.

pap

Traditions, big and small, make the holidays so precious even when things change. Now my parents are the ones hosting the big Easter egg hunt and family dinner. My mom bakes special bunny treats with my kids and we’ve added a few traditions of our own, like burying jelly beans outside the night before Easter and finding out they had grown into lollipops over night. And of course, no round of egg coloring is complete without the trophy black egg.

Easter collage

While I love the idea of baking with my kids, the truth is, I must have been waiting in the sarcasm line when they were passing out baking skills. So when we “bake” in this house, it’s only easy, kid friendly (OK, it’s really Amanda friendly), and something we can do quickly because we are on to the next activity pretty quickly. So these Easter Cookie Pops were perfect and yummy!

Easter Cookie Pops

  • Buttery Crackers
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter
  • Hershey’s semi sweet chocolate chips
  • Lollipop Sticks
  • Wax Paper
  • Colorful sprinkles and icing

  1. Spread the Reese’s Peanut Butter between crackers and insert the lollipop stick.
  2. Place the cookies in the freezer for a few minutes. This way the you  the peanut butter hardens and your stick won’t fall out while dipping or eating
  3. Melt the Hershey;s semi sweet chocolate chips in the microwave or in a double boiler
  4. Dip the cookies into the chocolate and cover all sides
  5. Lay the cookies on wax paper and allow time for the chocolate to set.
  6. Decorate with fun sprinkles or icing, eat, and enjoy!

Hop on over (did you see what I did there?) and check out Celebrate With Hershey’s  for a ton of adorable basket idea, recipes, crafts, and other ways to make your family’s Easter memorable. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway to sample some of Hershey’s yummy candy. Trust me, Hershey’s was kind enough to give me a huge sample of their Easter candy (that I enjoyed from the comfort of my bedroom closet) and it was SO GOOD! Now you need your own Easter Prize Pack. Making Chores Less Painful With Chore Monster

November 29, 2013 by amushro

ChoreMonster

You know when you reach that point in the day when you cannot, you simply CANNOT ask your children one more time to complete the simplest of tasks? And, if in fact, you have to ask them again, you will simply lose your mind, break open the peanut butter jar, and dive in head first? Oh you too? Glad to see this isn’t just happening around this joint.

Morning are getting pretty painful around here. No one will brush their teeth unless I ask them 746 times, and the idea of putting on socks and shoes is as if I have asked them to climb Mt. Everest. When I would see those adorable homemade chore charts or the charts you can buy, I sometimes think those are the answer; however, I can’t remember to keep up the advent calendar (and ours has chocolate). How am I supposed to maintain a chore chart? Really, I don’t need one more task.

So when Chore Monster introduced me to their website and apps that makes chores fun, easy to track, and the kids can pick their own rewards, I knew we could do this!

Setup was super easy (read: if it’s easy for me, you can do it too), and my little guy liked picking the rewards

Chore: Brush your teeth twice a day  Reward: You won’t have stinky Brontosaurus breath

Chore: Make your bed every morning Reward: Mommy will read an extra book to you and night

Chore: Get your socks and shoes on before school Reward: At the end of the week a trip to get frozen yogurt

These may seem like baby steps, y’all, but just having him accomplish these simple tasks without me having to ask a million times makes our mornings run so much more smoothly. I sorta love Chore Monster, and I’m totally writing their name with doodle hearts around it. Like this:

hearts chore monster

Because my main man even gets to pick his own rewards, we are even talking about the difference between things we have to do and the things that help us earn the big rewards. So if we make it a few days successfully completing our chores, he gets a trip to our favorite frozen yogurt place where he can add his own toppings–so basically a ton of gummy worms and chocolate chips.

So let’s review–he’s got minty fresh breath, shoes on is feet, and his bed looks like it came right out of Pottery Barn (if Pottery barn let preschoolers make their beds) and we all get frozen yogurt. Me likey!

Because we have the app on my phone, he was super excited to mark each chore as “complete” and he even wanted to add more chores! I started to think the possibilities were endless–make dinner for Mommy or paint the bathroom I’ve been asking your dad to do for months. Alright, we’ll be more realistic: clear your dishes after meals and feed the dog.

This kid loved his new responsibilities, loved marking each task complete, loved his rewards, and loved that Mommy wasn’t  screaming “WILL SOMEONE PLEASE BRUSH THEIR TEETH IN THIS HOUSE!”

The chores you pick and the rewards are totally up to you. So you make them age specific as well as change them when needed. Plus you can vary them like I did–a pat on the back for the basics and the big guns for the chores you really need to work on.

Want to try out ChoreMonster? Perfect, because the first 100 readers that click this link and sign up can start their own account for thirty days for free!

This post is part of  a  paid opportunity to partner with ChoreMonster.

NCAA and Rite Aid Make a Perfect Team! Enter to win some great prizes!

October 21, 2013 by amushro

*This is a sponsored post on behalf of the NCAA and Rite Aid. While I have been compensated for this post, all opinions are my own.*

Everyone knows that one of the best parts of fall is football season, and in this house it’s not just any football game that will do. In this house we only love the West Virginia University Mountaineers.

Like any true football fans, we are a bit crazy over our team. Many moons ago, Hubby and I actually had the rehearsal dinner for our wedding at the Football stadium.

Mushro (1)

At bedtime our kids always request WVU’s unofficial theme song, John Denver’s Country Roads. And on gameday, ONLY WVU gear will do. You know the usual. So when I had the chance to work with the NCAA ,Rite Aid, and Cafe Mom to help my readers get ready for their gameday with a chance to win some great prizes, I said “Let’s go Mountaineers!”… I mean yes.

A #FabSmile or Two and a Giveaway from Floss and Brush!

August 17, 2013 by amushro

Yes this is a sponsored post, butI really wasn’t a germaphobe until I had kids. I mean I’ve seen what germs can do when they steamroll through an entire family. As a parent, you feel terrible when your little ones are sick. If your husband is under the weather, the word is ending (according to him), and if Mamma gets sick, well, this ship is going down.

So because of these nasty germs that invade us in so many ways, I’m constantly preaching and practicing cover your mouth when you cough and wash your hands to everyone in this house.

So imagine my shock, surprise and gag reflex when I was watching Dr. Oz discuss germs and bacteria inside your home. He said the “normal” amount of bacteria for a surface is around 80, but our toothbrushes usually contain double that amount.  If you’re headed straight the your bathroom to throw your toothbrush away, I’ll wait.

You’re back? Oh good because I have something that may make you feel better about the yuckies on your family’s toothbrushes. These silly fools and their #FabSmile

#FabSmile

Sometimes brushing my kids’ teeth can be a little “interesting” actually it feels more like a wrestling match, but they do have the sweetest smiles. There isn’t much I wouldn’t do just to see these munchkins say “cheeeeessseee” for the camera.

So that is why FlossAndBrush.com has actually helped me out by easing some of my germ fears and making my life a little easier.

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three months. Unless you are some sort of amazing coupon queen, you can’t beat this deal. Plus each time you receive a delivery, you know it’s time to change out your family’s toothbrushes.  A great deal and helpful? Yes please!

FlossandBrush.com is actually the first company to offer this service and you can even add-on teeth whitening gel to your orders. This is always good for those of us that have had a little too much coffee over the years, right?

Here is where it gets good, the GIVEAWAY!

Tugaboos

June 14, 2013 by amushro

*Sure, this is a sponsored post, but I am pretty excited to share my newfound love for Rite Aid Tugaboos diapers with you!*

Much like her Mamma, my little lady has a whole lotta junk in her trunk; however, while I try to keep mine covered up, her excess baggage is adorable. Especially in diapers.

So when we were given a chance to try Rite Aid’s Tugaboo diapers, Mimi and I agreed to give it a whirl. Actually, she just liked the cute Tiger on the diaper and made up a little song about T is for Tiger. I assume that meant she agreed to try them out.

Rite Aid diaper size 2 42 ct

Anyone diapering bums knows that using the wrong diaper is bad news. I’ve been stuck with some that cost way too much money, don’t fit right, are uncomfortable against my baby’s skin, or the ultimate no-no, leave you with a big mess. A big poopy mess. It’s always nice when those big messes happen in their carseat, out in public, or my personal fav, the crib. And you know as well as I do, ain’t no one got time for that! So when we tried Rite Aid’s Tugaboos and realized there were little diaper gems, we were thrilled (and not covered in poopy). The diapers have recently been improved for added leakage protection and faster absorption, but that wasn’t the only reason we liked them.

z

The diapers have a cottony soft feel and soft stretchable waist and side panels. An added bonus was how nicely they fit her under her summer dresses and skirts. The diapers even have a hypoallergenic inner liner to help protect her sensitive skin.  I asked Mimi what she thought, but she just sang “T is for Tiger” over and over. Again, I’m taking this as she likes them.

Diaper2

This may be our first round of Rite Aid Tugaboo diapers, but I can guarantee it won’t be our last!

So what are you waiting for? Try Rite Aid Tugaboo diapers and do it this month because you could win a beautiful Vera Bradley bag. Fancy, huh?

Rite-Aid-Vera-Bradley-banner

For the month of June, all Tugaboos purchases will earn an entry into the Tugaboos and Vera Bradley Sweepstakes!

With every in-store purchase of qualifying Tugaboos products using your wellness+ card at any Rite Aid store between June 1-30, 2013, you will receive an entry for a chance to win one of (25) Vera Bradley Designer Diaper Bags filled with select Tugaboos products.
