On My Honor: Real Life Lessons Learned as a Girl Scout

January 31, 2014 by amushro

G.S. disclaimer

Yesterday two Girl Scouts, all decked out in their snazzy green uniforms, came to my door selling cookies. Sashes proudly displayed their numerous badges that were surely earned with great dedication and pride, and just a few steps behind them was their mom, patiently waiting and smiling as her girls made yet another successful sale. Not only do I love Girl Scout cookies (seriously could there be anything more delicious?), but the Girl Scouts organization truly holds a special place in my heart.

Sharplogo“You know,” I told the scouts, “I was a Girl Scout too, and my mom was my troop leader.” The youngest piped up to exclaim “Our mom is the troop leader too!” I waved to her mom and told the girls “Well you are very lucky. Be sure to thank her.”

Immediately I started thinking about the life skills learned while a Girl Scout. Who would’ve thought some of the most valuable skills I learned came years later when I became a mother thinking about my own mom and troop leader.

Girl Scouts

While there are badges for photography, music,  and gardening, there really should be one for multi-tasking and making it work. Because to make my Girl Scout years fun-filled and full of smiles, my mom surely earned those badges.

The camping, the songs, the crafts, my mom loved it all, but she really cherished that her own mother was her troop leader and that she could do the same for me. While digging through photos of her Girl Scout days, I found this gem. Check out my super stylish mom at camp (first row, second from the right):

When it came time for me to become a Girl Scout, my mom was all in. Even though she already had a full plate with a million other responsibilities, she jumped in and planned each meeting and activity with such thoughtfulness (or at least it looked that way) and skill (again, it really did look that way). Even a troop full of girls that really hated to be outdoors earned a few more badges than they thought they could.

Mother/Daughter sleep away camp with matching shirts? You betcha!

While my grandmother painstakingly sewed each and every badge onto my mother’s sash, my mother had no time for that nonsense. She hot glued those bad boys right on, and if one popped off, she’d just fire up the hot glue gun. Sometimes you just have to make it work.

But more importantly than badges or camps was the fact that my mom knew being a Girl Scout was something I loved and she wanted to be a part of something I loved even though it made her already hectic life even more bananas.  So maybe the most important life skill I learned as a Girl Scout was not how to make jewelry or line dancing, but being present for your kids, being a part of what they love, and using a hot glue gun to make it work.

The Girl Scouts have declared February 7-8, 2014 as National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend! This special event is a great opportunity for Girl Scouts to share the importance of the Cookie Program and what it does for the girls and their communities! Through this effort, Girl Scouts hope to show when we buy a box of cookies, we’re helping the girls learn important skills like goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics— skills essential to life and success!

Cookie Weekend

So if you love the Girl Scouts and Girl Scout Cookies (and I know you do), join them for the National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend February 7-8!

Football, Family, Food, and Fun: DiGiorno Pizza scores a Touchdown with #GameTimeGoodies

January 24, 2014 by amushro

CB Disclosure White Background 600 px wide

Usually when we try to watch TV as a family, the kids’ votes are the loudest and their shouts choose the nightly entertainment (read: lots of Disney movies); however, when it’s football season in this house, we just need to offer the kids their favorite food (pizza) and a front row seat to lay claim to the football game! The only problem with pizza in this house, is that there never seems to be enough. If there is one thing my husband loves (besides his darling, charming, witty, hilarious wife) it’s pizza. So when Walmart put DiGiorno pizzas on a special rollback for only $4.50, I stocked up, cooked a few up, and put my feet up to enjoy football, family, food, and fun!

#GameTimeGoodies #shop #cbias

Now we are a super hungry family of four, so one pizza just won’t do. However, have you checked out the prices to have two or three pizzas delivered from a local pizza chain? Uh, no thanks! So while I was wrapping up all of my other shopping at Walmart, I grabbed a few DiGiorno pizzas and filled up our freezer. Seriously, with prices this low, you’d be crazy not to stock up!

DiGiorno #GameTimeGoodies #shop #cbias

Now let’s be honest, the best part of frozen pizza is that it’s so easy: pop it in the oven, wait until it cooks, and enjoy. Now I don’t want to brag, but I do cook up a mean frozen pizza.

#GameTimeGoodies #shop #cbias

Sometimes frozen pizza can be a little questionable; however, DiGiorno was so yummy. In twenty minutes we had dinner and with the $4.50 rollback price, it didn’t break the bank. Just look how delicious this pizza looks! Believe me, it tasted as good as it looks! I’m happy my husband doesn’t eat the crust because I’ll gladly swipe the leftovers off his plate. The self rising crust is so good!

#GameTimeGoodies #shop #cbias

To change things up a little, I even turned one pizza into cheesesticks and put together some easy dipping sauces. A little butter, olive oil and chopped garlic made a yummy garlic dipping sauce. I also added a pizza sauce from the pantry and parmesan cheese from the fridge to create a trio of fun dippers for our cheesesticks.

So how did my little football fans score? Let’s just say it was a touchdown plus a field goal!

#GameTimeGoodies #shop #cbias

While the pizza, cheesesticks, and dipping sauces were a hit, the game had quite a few ups and downs

Where's the flag? #GameTimeGoodies #Shop #cbias

Make sure you score big at Walmart before the Big Game! Even if your team isn’t playing, you can still throw a great party, eat great food, and watch the commercials, right?

Do You Know Your School Kid?

January 21, 2014 by amushro

School days, school days, something…something..something about golden rules, but really it’s just the days when kids prove their parents have no idea whom they have been raising.

Remember when I told you how my little gal was having a hard time starting “school” (really it’s just one day a week not real, real school)? Well if you missed it, here it is.

After a few weeks of tears (both hers and mine), the last few drop-offs have gone beautifully! As she saunters down the hallway (the same hallway she spent weeks crying and screaming as if we were headed down the green mile), she turns to me and says “Bye Mommy! See you soon! I’ll miss you.” She jumps into the arms of her teacher and there I stand: proud, shocked, relieved, weepy, and pretty stoked to have a few kid free hours on my hands.

But it wasn’t until I went to pick her up from school that I learned I really have no idea who this kid is outside of the house. Oh, I KNOW who she is when she is home ruling the roost, but little did I know kids come in two varieties: the kid you know and your school kid.

School Kid

When it was time to bust her out of school, I was actually greeted in the hallway by her teacher.Excited to see how my daughter’s craft, play, and snack filled day went, I became “that” mom and bombarded her teacher to give me every single stinkin’ detail. Here is how the convo went down:

Me: How did she do today!?!

Teacher: Well, today was not such a good day. (insert big sad face)

Me: Yikes! What happened? (Crap)

Teacher: Well she had a really hard time sharing toys with her friends.

Me: Really?  (yeah, tell me about it.  You’d think the second kid would be good at sharing)

Teacher: And she really didn’t listen to directions or what we were saying to her.

Me: Oh no! (Oh yes…fun, right?)

Teacher: And she just wanted to do what she wanted to do.

Me: Uh-huh….  (Yup, sounds about right and any second she is going to say she threw a HUGE tantrum)

Teacher: Then she had a very big tantrum.

Me: No! (Right on cue…)

Teacher: And she has a really bad runny nose

Me: Wait, what? Mimi has a runny nose? She didn’t have one when she left the house today.

Teacher: Oh, no! Oh wait! You aren’t….. oh, you are Mimi’s mommy. No, no, no I confused you with another Mommy. Oh no, Mimi was an angel. Good as gold…Good as gold. She is such a joy and such a good listener.

Me: Good as gold? (Are we talking about the same kid? The one with the wild blonde curly hair and the high pitch deafening screams. That kid was good as gold?).

I must have looked totally shell-shocked because her teacher had to lead me into the classroom by the elbow. There I saw my little lady sitting nicely at a round, yellow table with a few friends coloring. COLORING!! Who is this kid and what have they done with my daughter?

I scooped up that “Good as Gold” girl and we danced out of the classroom–no reason to blow her cover now. I may have no idea who she is at school, but I do know that she and I both love Starbucks after school. And she always wants a chocolate milk and a cakepop. At least I think she does…

Has this happened to you? Does your kid have a home personality and a school personality?

Amazing Deals on Student Mobile Plans From The Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store

December 9, 2013 by amushro

CB Disclosure White Background 600 px wide

#shop #APlusPlan #Cbias Amazing Deals on Student Mobile Plans If you are lucky enough to be in earshot of me from Thanksgiving to New Years, you will be wildly entertained by my nonstop singing of Christmas carols. While some may liken my voice to Adele (OK, really no one would say that), it’s the two kiddos that have joined in on my festive holiday singing that are the crowd pleasers. While they are huge Jingle Bells fans, my favorite is still Home for the Holidays, because this time of year, I am missing my family tremendously and counting down the days until we can all be together to celebrate the holidays. So until I can get home to “Pennsylvania for some homemade pumpkin pie” my kids and I will be counting on modern technology to keep our family connected. In this house, cool new gadgets mean we stay connected to my parents and my brother’s family. It’s not uncommon to find one kid Skyping with my parents and the other chatting on the phone with my nephew. The best electronics might mean games, pictures, or fast internet service to some, but to us it means family time.

Staying Connected- #shop #APlusPlan #Cbias

Maybe it’s overuse, the constant drops on the floor, or maybe it’s just the holiday stress, but my cellphone has not been pulling its weight around here. Time for an upgrade! I decided to try the Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store that’s located inside the mall near our house. While Best Buy is sort of a heaven for my husband (must be all of the flashing lights, TVs, and gadgets), Best Buy Mobile Specialty store is exactly what I needed: close to home, just the mobile devices and accessories that I need, and super helpful associates for those of us that ask A LOT of questions. Added bonus: Santa was located right outside the store! I told the kids the “Big Man in Red” could see if they were naughty or nice while Mommy shopped for a new phone.

Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store #shop

While my kids ran around the store grabbing every phone off of the shelves (is that why there is a rope attached to the phones? Smart!), Luis, who I will now refer to as my new best friend, was the lucky sales associate to help show me everything Best Buy Mobile Specialty Stores have to offer. He showed me the different phones, all of the different pricing plans, and the trade in value of my current phone.  In addition to showing me a few tips and tricks on his own phone, he thought it was hilarious when my two year old knocked down a rack of phone cases. My best buddy Luis has a two year old of his own at home and knows the drill.

Helpful associates #shop

After we helped clean up the cellphone cover disaster, I had to pull out the big guns and “call” Santa.

Calling Santa #shop

Since this family relies on my cellphone to stay connected with our family that lives far away,  one particular plan that Luis told me about is an amazing deal, is the perfect way to keep families connected over the holidays, and it helps students save money on pricey mobile plans. The Sprint My Way Promotion is a way for students to purchase a phone flat-out (some of the phones are pricey but some are really reasonable), but the best part– talk, text, and data are free! Are you thinking about your own mobile pricing plans right now? If you are a student or you have a student on your shopping list, think about how much this could save you (plus they would have to call you because you got this great deal for them)

Here is how it’s works:

#shop The Sprint My Way Promotion

If there was ever a doubt in my mind that our fancy electronics are the key to helping us stay connected to our family (especially over the holidays), I watched my son “call” his cousin while we in the store.
